Music to fight Climate Change, Familiar made New, Coping with Uncertainty

MusicMatters Header

Even as the end of 2020 approaches, few people are likely to miss it or look back at it wistfully. Despite the lockdowns, quarantines, and isolation, 2021 promises to be a better year. More than just the vaccine, it's the resilience and creativity of people that gives me hope.

Music to fight climate change Art of every kind was impacted hugely by the global pandemic. Despite the challenges the creative spark in musicians was not dimmed. Beyond going online they've begun exploring newer topics, such as fighting climate change. See this tribute to nature Dharti Ma by Bombay Jayashri and others.

Familiar made new Each of us have our own favorite songs in every language whether it is Kurai Ondrum Illai (Tamil), Tharuni Njan (Malayalam) or Nanati (Telugu). When it comes to Kannada, the songs of the Haridasa mystics invariably ends up on the list. And hearing a favorite, such as Krishna Nee Begane Baaro by different artists can feel like rediscovering something new in the familiar. Hear Rashid Khan and Vijay Prakash singing this popular song.

Coping with uncertainty Even as vaccinations begin in the UK and USA, much uncertainty remains. For musicians the uncertainty extends beyond matters of health to what the future may hold. Those of us who are parents have always recognized that we are rarely in control. Here's how I've dealt with uncertainty this year, by writing about it. Time tested techniques such as meditation, exercise and listening to ancient hymns such as Vaidyanatha Ashtakam presented here by Akkarai Sisters helps to cope with uncertainty.
