Marivere Gathi - Shyama Shastri

A musician has many milestones, many firsts - first concert, first album, first tour. This concert recording is special for many reasons. It was the first time I was performing at the Bangalore Gayana Samaja - an iconic music organization for carnatic music lovers in Bangalore. It was also a concert where I had two gurus with me - one by my side playing the violin (Lalgudi Rajalakshmi) and one seated in the front row of the audience (Seethalakshmi Venkatesan). It was a litmus test of sorts. The Telugu song Marivere Gathi in raga Anandabhairavi encapsulates the composer’s (Shyama Shastri) feelings as he seeks the protection of the goddess (Meenakshi) of Madurai. As Navaratri is underway in India the song seems all the more special as carnatic musicians present krithis praising the mother goddess.
